Who Should Avoid It?

Eating Figs Daily

Figs (orFicus carica) are a fruit native to western Asia. Before sugar became a popular and accessible dietary ingredient, figs had long been used to sweeten desserts.

Packed with nutrients that offer a variety of health benefits, research shows figs are linked toimproved digestive health, anti-inflammatory conditions, blood sugar levels, bone strength, and more.

1. Promotes Digestive Health

Figs contain nutrients and beneficial compounds that cansupport digestive health. Evidence suggests that the fiber content in figs encourages regular bowel movements, while theprebioticshelp feed the healthy bacteria naturally found in the gut.

Another study found that people withirritable bowel syndrome with constipation(IBS-C) reported less pain and fewer hard stools when eating dried figs twice daily.

2. May Improve High Blood Pressure and Heart Health

Another lab study found that fig extract boosted levels ofhigh-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (or “good cholesterol”)while lowering total cholesterol (a combination of HDL and LDL) cholesterol andtriglycerides(fat in the blood).

While these preliminary results are promising, additional human research is needed.

3. May Help Manage Blood Sugar

Though fruit is generally known for having a high natural sugar content, some evidence suggests that eating dried fruits, like figs, could improveblood sugar levels.

Research shows that eating figs regularly helps regulate blood sugar levels, supporting healthy weight management and lowering the risk of type 2 diabetes.Another study suggested that drinking fig leaf tea daily reduced blood sugar levels in people withtype 1 diabetes.

The rich fiber content in figs also likely slows the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream.

4. May Slow Cancer Growth

Some initial findings show that figs' antioxidants work toward stoppingcancer cellsfrom growing and spreading. Studies have been performed in animals and in the laboratory. Human clinical trials are needed to confirm this potential connection between figs and cancer risk reduction.

5. May Aid Healthy Skin and Hair

Figs, with their highiron content, may help maintain healthy strands. In some people, not getting enough iron can result in hair loss.

In addition, fig fruit extract seems to support healthy skin in a few ways. The antioxidant properties found in figs may improve the appearance of wrinkles and reducecollagen breakdownin the skin.

When applied topically daily, fig was more successful at treatingdermatitis (skin irritation)symptoms than the standardhydrocortisone cream.

6. May Prevent Osteoporosis

As a source ofcalciumandpotassium, figs could be a solid food option to promote strong bones and preventosteoporosis(a bone-weakening disease).

7. Reduce Inflammation

Thanks to anti-inflammatory and antioxidant nutrients, figs may be able to combat inflammation-causing compounds known ascytokines.

Evidence shows cytokines triggerinflammationand speed up damage in the body, potentially promoting the development of autoimmune conditions.

8. May Help With Erectile Dysfunction

Researchers have been exploring how figs might help treaterectile dysfunction(ED). Some animal studies found they could help improve sexual function andhypertension.

Another animal study concluded that consuming figs and a mix of two other plants seemed to help increase sexual activity.

While diet has been suggested as a factor in erectile dysfunction development, additional human research is needed to study how figs may play a role.

A Word From VerywellThere are many ways to incorporate figs into your diet. You can start your day with fig-infused oatmeal, create a refreshing fig and goat cheese salad, blend figs into smoothies, satisfy your sweet tooth with fig energy balls, and elevate your cheese platter with figs.—MELISSA NIEVES, RD, MEDICAL EXPERT BOARD

Who Should Avoid Eating Figs?

While figs are considered safe for most healthy adults, some people should consider avoiding or limiting their fig consumption.

People with digestive disorders likeirritable bowel syndrome(IBS) may not want to add figs to their diet. The fiber in figs may triggerdiarrheaor other digestive symptoms.

Figs may also interfere with the wayblood-thinning medicationsfunction in the body. The richvitamin Kcontent in figs can cause blood thinners to be less effective.

Although rare, anyone with abirch pollen allergymay also experience a fig allergy.

Check with a healthcare provider before adding figs to your diet, especially if you have a digestive condition or are taking prescription medications.

Is It OK to Eat Figs Every Day?

Figs are a versatile food option that can be incorporated into a nutritious diet daily. In addition to being a solid source of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and fiber, this fruit can be consumed fresh, dried, cooked, baked, or in beverages like tea.

Because figs are high in fiber and contain a moderate amount of sugar, people who live with digestive issues or are watching their sugar intake should be mindful of how often they consume figs. Otherwise, figs may be eaten every day if desired.

Summary

Figs are rich in antioxidants, fiber, and other minerals. Research suggests they may be a supportive fruit for digestive health, blood sugar maintenance, bone disorders, cancer protection, and more.

While figs are likely a safe dietary addition for most healthy adults, people with digestive conditions like IBS or taking blood-thinning medications should talk to a healthcare provider before implementing figs into their diet.
