The Texas Department of State Health Services identified the contamination during routine random sampling at a store in the state. As of Jan. 1, no illnesses linked to the product have been reported.
The recalled products were distributed to Walmart stores in 20 states. While these products are no longer available in stores, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall notice on Dec. 27 to inform consumers who may still have the product at home.
What To Know About Listeria
Listeriais a type of bacteria commonly found in soil, water, and some animals. It can also be present in raw milk or products made from raw milk. It can contaminate food during processing, including ready-to-eat products like deli meats or packaged vegetables.
While refrigeration is an important food safety step, it does not killListeria. Thoroughly reheating food to a safe temperature is essential for reducing the risk of infection.
Symptoms of Listeria
Severe infections can develop if the bacteria spread beyond the GI tract. Symptoms may include stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. In these cases, the symptoms may show up one to four weeks after exposure. Sometimes, they don’t appear for up to 70 days later.
Certain groups are at higher risk for severe illness, including pregnant people, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. While pregnant people may not show symptoms,Listeriacan lead to miscarriage, premature birth, or a life-threatening infection in a newborn.
