Improving Sex Life
The frequency ofsex after 60may be different than it is for people in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and even 50s, but that does not mean that older adults do not want or enjoy sex. There may be adjustments you need to make after you turn 60, but that’s true of any other lifestyle change that can affect sexual function.
Although most changes in sexual function after age 60 fall within the range of “normal,” there are things you can do to revitalize your sex life and maintain the many health benefits of sex whatever your age.

A Note on Gender and Sex TerminologyVerywell Health acknowledges thatsex and genderare related concepts, but they are not the same. To accurately reflect our sources, this article uses terms like “male,” “female,” “men,” and “women” as the sources use them.
A Note on Gender and Sex Terminology
Verywell Health acknowledges thatsex and genderare related concepts, but they are not the same. To accurately reflect our sources, this article uses terms like “male,” “female,” “men,” and “women” as the sources use them.
Frequency of Sex After 60
According to the National Poll on Healthy Aging conducted in 2018, 40% of adults between the ages of 65 and 80 are sexually active. Of the respondents, 73% said they were satisfied with their sex lives. Among those with spouses or partners, 54% said they were sexually active.
As people age, they tend to havesex less frequentlyfor many reasons, including aging-related hormonal changes, chronic illnesses, a change in priorities, and other factors. This doesn’t mean, however, that all older adults experience a steep decline in sexual activity.
According to the national survey:
A similar 2019 study published inSexual Medicinefound that older adults who are sexually active reported a higher quality of life and sense of well-being.
Does Intercourse Matter?
Among older adults, sex and sexual intercourse aren’t necessarily synonymous. A 2018 study inPyshcogeriaticsfound that about 60% of older adults surveyed said they took part in more “subtle” forms of sex and believed that quality was more important than the frequency of sex. They also regarded partnered sex as more intimate.
Recent research suggests that having a partner can do more than just provide intimacy; it can also lead to more sex.
According to a 2017 study in theJournal of Sexual Medicine, roughly 50% of partnered men and 40% of partner women over 65 reported being sexually active in the past six months. Among unpartnered men and women over 65, only 13% and 1% respectively reported sex during the same time frame.
Partnered or not, older adults who are not satisfied with their sex lives often list health conditions, loss of desire, pain, fatigue, and concerns about their looks as reasons why they are not having sex as much as they would like.
Health Benefits of Sex After 60
Research continues to show there are many benefits to having sex later in life, not only emotional and physical but also mental. Here are just a few examples:
Increased Happiness
A 2019 study in the journalPLoS Onefound that sexual satisfaction in males was linked to a greater life enjoyment score. For females, theemotional intimacyof sex was linked to higher scores.
Generally, older adults tend to place a higher priority on intimacy and bonding than on sex itself. According to a 2020 study in theEuropean Journal of Aging, the frequency of sexual intercourse paired with intimacy corresponded to stronger feelings of well-being. By contrast, the absence of intimacy or intercourse tended to reduce these feelings for both males and females.Being physically intimate with another person can have health benefits for people of any age, but it can be especially important for older adults who are vulnerable to isolation and loneliness.
Improved Health
A 2019 study in theArchives of Sexual Behaviorfound that a higher frequency of sex in older adults was linked to lower rates of cancer, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses.
While this doesn’t mean that having more sex can “prevent” disease, it does suggest that being healthy and living a healthier lifestyle enhances sexual function.
With that said, being single and not having sex is also fine as long as it makes you happy. Not having sex does not mean that you are at greater risk of illness. What matters most is that you’re taking care of your physical and mental health irrespective of how much or how little sex you have.
Better Brain Function
A 2019 study from Coventry University in the U.K. found a direct link between sex frequency and levels of cognitive function in older adults.(Cognitive function involves memory, flexible thinking, self-control, verbal fluency, and visual-spatial processing.)
Treating Health Conditions to Improve Your Sex Life
Older couples are commonly faced with aging-related challenges that directly affect sexual function, leading to erectile dysfunction (ED), vaginal dryness, pain with sex, and reduced libido.
If faced with these conditions, speak with your primary care provider about treatments for these and other forms of sexual dysfunction. You can also ask for a referral to agynecologistwho specializes in the female reproductive tract or aurologistwho specializes male reproductive tract.
Erectile Dysfunction
Medical treatments for erectile dysfunction (ED) include oralPDE5 inhibitorslike Viagra (sildenafil) and Cialis (tadalafil),injectable alprostadillike Trimix and Caverject, penile vacuum pumps, erection rings, andpenile implants.
Psychological counseling can help overcome emotional and relationship issues that contribute to ED, including a type calledpsychogenic EDthat occurs in the absence of any physical cause.
Vaginal Dryness and Pain
Vaginal dryness and pain (dyspareunia) can be treated with topicalestrogen creamslike Estrace and Vagifem, vaginal estrogen suppositories, or rings. A drug called Osphena (ospemifene) makes the vaginal tissues thicker and less fragile.
Low Libido
Low libido can be treated withtestosterone replacement therapy (TRT)in both males and females (although the effect is generally stronger in males). Testosterone can be delivered via an injection, topical gel, transdermal patch, nasal spray, or newer capsule formulations.
Counseling in combination with TRT and drugs like Osphena may also be useful in women diagnosed withhypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD).
There are also many drugs that cause low libido, including certain antidepressants, blood pressure medications, antipsychotics, anticonvulsants, and H2 blockers used for heartburn. Adjusting the dose or finding a reasonable substitute may substantially improve your sex drive.
Revitalizing Your Sex Life
There are several things you can do to keep your sex life active as you get older. In general, taking care of your health is the first and perhaps most important step. If you are not physically and emotionally well, it will be harder to have a healthy sex life.
Diet and Exercise
Eating nutritious food and exercising help give you energy and can improve your sense of well-being in all aspects of your life, including your sex life.
On the flip side, being overweight or havingobesitycan diminish sexual function even in young people. The effect tends to be greater in older adults because they have higher rates of heart disease, lung disease, and other aging-related illnesses that contribute to sexual dysfunction.
Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight can improve sexual function no matter how young or old you are.
By way of example, a 2020 study inJAMA Open Networkfound that a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, and fish—and low in red and processed meats—was associated with a lower risk of ED.Similarly, regular exercise is linked to better sexual function during and after menopause. Specific activities, likepelvic floor exercises, may have a greater and more direct effect on sexual function in older females particularly. Exercise even appears beneficial in older women on antidepressants.
Talking With Your Partner
Being upset about changes in sexual function as you get older is normal, but it can put a strain on your relationship. It’s important that you don’t avoid or ignore these feelings.
Talk with your partner openly and honestly about how you’re feeling. You can work together to find a solution, and doing so can even bring you closer.
You should also reach out to a professional ifsexual dysfunction is causing you anxiety. It’s also not uncommon for people with sexual dysfunction to have symptoms of depression, particularly with ED and HSDD.
Safe Sex in Your 60s
Whatever your age, it is important to talk openly with your partner about your sexual history as well as the use ofcondoms,HIV PrEP, and other forms of protection. If you and your partner have not been tested, ask your provider aboutSTI screeningbefore engaging in a sexual relationship.
Summary
While the frequency of sex over 60 might not be what it was when you were younger, you can certainly have a satisfying sex life as you get older. The benefits of having sex as you age range from boosting brain power to improving your overall sense of well-being.
Keep in mind that sex—and how you feel about it—may change as you get older. If you’re struggling with the changes and are not happy with your sex life, it’s important to speak up. Your partner, as well as a healthcare provider or therapist, can support you and help you find a way to make sex safe and satisfying.
