The Food and Drug Administration announced a voluntary recall for Walmart’s Great Value brand Chicken Broth due to potential “packaging failures that could compromise the sterility of the product."

This recall affects Walmart chicken broth that’s packaged in 48-ounce aseptic paper cartons specifically. More than 12,000 cartons have been recalled.

If you’ve been stocking up on soup ingredients during cold and flu season, you should check your pantry to see if you have any chicken broth that’s part of the recall.

The recalled products were distributed from two locations to around 242 Walmart stores in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.

The FDA notice said the packaging failure could lead to spoilage.

Aseptic packaging is designed to be sterile and keep food shelf-stable. This is why unopened chicken broth can be stored in a cupboard and only needs refrigeration after opening. Packaging failures can not only result in messy leaks but also make the food vulnerable to air and moisture, which can promote bacterial growth.

No illnesses have been reported so far, and no risk level has been set. Walmart also had yet to publish a formal recall notice on its website.

If you have any of the recalled chicken broth in your pantry, you can either toss it out or take it back to Walmart for a full refund.
